Application Of Tantalum Scrap in Alloys

The application of tantalum as an alloying element in steel is still very small. Tantalum has a very high affinity with interstitial atoms in steel such as C, N, etc., and the compounds formed with them are very stable even at high temperatures.

Scholars from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences have preliminarily studied the strengthening effect and related mechanisms of tantalum on Fe{{0}}C-Ta alloys through mechanical property testing and OM, SEM, and TEM observations. The research results show that when the content of tantalum scrap increases from 0.027 percent to 0.059 percent , the strength of the alloy is greatly improved, and the impact energy of the alloy with high tantalum content decreases by 87J, but it still has good toughness. The analysis shows that the strengthening effect of tantalum in iron-based alloys is represented by solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. After the high tantalum content alloy is aged at 600 degree for 1 h, its strength and plasticity reach the maximum at the same time, and the best tantalum-containing carbide is obtained. precipitation strengthening effect.
